Walking route
Pinar de la Alfahuara.

The Pinar de la Alfahuara is a beautiful hiking area within the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park, a relatively unknown yet enchanting nature reserve in eastern Andalusia. The name Alfahuara derives from Arabic and means "spring," which perfectly reflects the rich natural environment and biodiversity of this forest reserve. This forest is one of the few ancient pine forests still intact in the province of Almería. It has been protected since the 16th century, when King Felipe II introduced regulations to regulate the felling of these valuable trees following extensive deforestation in the region.

The route begins at a historic site called La Aduana, where forest rangers and customs posts once stood to monitor the forest and trade. From here, the trail winds through a magnificent pine forest, offering varied views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. One of the highlights of the route is the Mirador Punta del Morral, a viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean forest and the surrounding valleys of Topares and Cañadas de Cañepla. This viewpoint is not only visually impressive but also an excellent place to take a break. Birdwatchers also have a good chance of seeing impressive birds here, such as the griffon vulture. After the viewpoint, the route descends towards the Barranco Agrio, a ravine-like area where the vegetation changes and you can find leafy trees such as maples and other species that add depth to the landscape. Next, you arrive at the Los Alamicos recreation area, a pleasant spot with picnic tables, shade, and tranquility—perfect for enjoying a lunch break before starting the return journey.
