Playa de los Muertos.
From the parking lot you ascend a beautiful path along the edge of the mountain to the flattened top. Here you will immediately see the Torre De La Mesa Rodàn. This tower dates back to 1497 and was considered the most dangerous point for Moorish invasions on the coast of Cabo de Gata. The tower was rebuilt in 1766 on the orders of Charles III as a horseshoe-shaped fortified tower to protect the coast from Barbary pirates. In the early 19th century the fortress was used as a makeshift lighthouse, while in the later 1800s it was handed over to the Carabineros Corps (predecessors of the Guardia Civil), and in 1941 to the Guardia Civil. The view of the Mesà Roldan is also very beautiful. The Roldán Mesa lighthouse was inaugurated on December 31, 1863 and became electric in 1972. On the other side you descend via a paved road. Afterwards it continues over a wide unpaved road to the beautiful beach, Playa de los Muertos. How can such a beautiful beach be called the “beach of the dead”? They say that skippers often arrived here more dead than alive, because the currents that converged during stormy days could drag entire boats along with them. From the beach you ascend to the Playa de los Muertos viewpoint. Here you have one last beautiful view of the beach and the vast surroundings.
