The Forêt des Cedrès.

When you think of Provence, you often picture lavender fields and olive groves. But high on the Petit Luberon plateau, near the beautiful village of Bonnieux, lies a truly remarkable surprise: a centuries-old cedar forest. A hike through the Forêt des Cedrès, combined with the route to the Portalas viewpoint, is a must for any hiker visiting the Vaucluse.

Belvédère du Portalas.

The hike begins beneath the dense canopy of cedars, which provides a pleasant coolness even on hot summer days. The path is largely flat and easily accessible. As you leave the forest toward the southern edge of the plateau, the landscape changes abruptly. The dense forest gives way to a rugged limestone ridge. This marks the transition to the Sentier du Portalas. Here, you walk on the boundary between the wooded north face and the steep, rocky south face of the Luberon. The Belvédère du Portalas is the literal and figurative highlight. From the cliff's edge, you have a breathtaking panoramic view of the Durance Valley. In clear weather, you can see as far as the Alpilles, the Montagne Sainte-Victoire near Aix-en-Provence, and sometimes even the shimmer of the Mediterranean Sea in the distance.
