Castell de la Granadell.

From the beach of Granadella the route climbs steeply high above the bay. Then you walk along a mountain path all the way to the highest cliff. Here you already have a beautiful view of the bay and on the other side the famous Llop Mari cave just below the tower of Ambolo. You now descend steeply again along some stairs, a real mountain path and a small secured passage, towards the ruins of the castle of Granadella. The Castell de la Granadella is a small 18th century fortress and was built in 1739 as part of a defense system to protect the coast from attacks by Barbary pirates from North Africa. The fortress had a horseshoe shape and housed a garrison of three men, equipped with two bronze cannons. The castle was strategically placed on the rocky point called Morro del Castell and offered an excellent view over the bay and the surrounding sea, which was essential for detecting approaching threats. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed by the British Royal Navy at the beginning of the 19th century during the Napoleonic Wars. From the castle you walk over the ridge, with beautiful panoramic views, to the mirador de Levante. Do not expect a traditional viewpoint, but rather an old restored building with benches where you can enjoy the view. Via unpaved roads you now walk inland towards the Barranc de Martorell. You follow the ravine via a beautiful path to return to the starting point.
