The Anloërdiepje.

This walk in the Drentsche Aa National Park introduces you to the beautiful Anloërdiepje stream valley. Rows of trees extend down to the stream, which flows through the valley like a lifeline. Between them lie meadows like green pastures. Winter fodder for livestock was once harvested here. The pasture landscape still exudes the spirit of medieval farming.

The walk begins in the beautiful village of Anloo and heads towards the Anloërdiepje stream valley. Along the Anloërdiepje, there are countless views between the trees. The hedgerows divide the stream valley into green spaces. They were planted by medieval farmers. From the seventeenth century onwards, the trees marked the boundaries between plots. You follow wide sandy roads and small grass paths towards the Gasterse Duinen dunes. You skirt the edge of this beautiful heathland and drifting sand area towards the Anloërdiepje. You follow this stream for a very short distance before returning to Anloo along hedgerows and meadows. Before reaching the starting point, you pass St. Magnus Church. Dating back to the eleventh century, this church is one of the oldest in Drenthe. The building is constructed of tuff stone from the Eifel region. Until the eighteenth century, the church hosted court hearings of the highest court in the province: the etstoel.
