The Schranshoeve.

We start at the municipal sports center Brieleke and walk along rural roads between fields and along allotments. We make a short loop near the E34-E313, and then we reach the fortress of Wommelgem. Fort 2 is one of eight Brialmont forts: the brick and stone forts built in 1860-1864 by captain and fortress architect Henri Alexis Brialmont. Over the years, the fortress has undergone many changes, such as reinforcing the fort with concrete and adding two armored turrets. The inner fort is always free to visit. The outer fortress (which includes the main front building and the large caponier) is only accessible during activities of associations, guided tours or special events. Via the canal we reach the main entrance and so we can view the inner fortress. Via the outside of the canal we then continue on rural roads and pass the Schranshoeve. This is a walled farm with access over a bridge. In 1390 she was known as Dornhoeve. A beautiful bakehouse still evokes memories of earlier times. However, not much remains of the original farm, as a result of the flying bombs in WWII. We then walk back to our starting point via the center of Wommelgem.
