Baarle-Hertog is a fragmented municipality. There are 22 enclaves: territories completely surrounded by the Netherlands. In addition, there are four parts that are completely located in Belgium on one side bordering the Netherlands. Of these, Zondereigen is the largest area. During WW I Belgium was occupied by the German army, the Netherlands was neutral. The Belgian-Dutch border was the dividing line between war and peace. In Baarle-Hertog the center remained free, but Zondereigen was occupied. Between 1915 and 1918, the German army closed off the entire national border with a high-voltage wire barrier: the death wire.
