Balderij and Rielen- en Winkelbroek.

Where the Grote and Kleine Kaliebeek flow together in Tielen, there is a vast swamp area. Absolute eye-catchers in the Balderij form the beautiful ponds. More lakes and ponds in the adjacent Rielens Gebroekt. You are amazed by the many lives around, on and in the water. The forest stream damsel, tree creeper and the kingfisher feel completely delighted here. Between nodes 48 and 47 you step over a wooden path through vast alder forests, very typical for this area. And the barracks that you pass along the way? This forms the home base for the third battalion paratroopers in Tielen.

POI 1 - Balderij Nature Reserve.

Balderij is a nature reserve in Tielen. It is often mentioned together with the adjacent area Rielenbroek. Balderij is an old deformation of "Balder Heide". It would be a place where the Germanic god Balder, the spirit of the plant world, was worshiped. There is also a small possibility that "Balder" would be a medieval word with the same meaning as Berlaar. Namely a woody and swampy terrain. The "Rielens gebroeckt" in Lichtaart and the old military domain of Zevendonk (Winkelsbroek), two adjacent areas, were purchased by Natuurpunt. Together with the "De Waal" area in Tielen, they now form a unique bird sanctuary where rare species of birds live among many other species.
