Groot Huisven.

The Groote Heide was once a heathland area of approximately 5000 hectares that stretched between Heeze, Geldrop, Eindhoven, Valkenswaard and the Achelse Kluis. Large-scale reclamations took place, especially at the beginning of the 20th century, during which fens were drained and -mainly- coniferous forests were planted. The large heathland area is divided into the Groote Heide at the height of Heeze, the Valkenhorst the part between the A2 and N296, the Leenderbos and the Groote Heide between the Leenderbos and the Belgian border. All the areas mentioned are part of the De Groote Heide nature border park. The walk goes through the northern part of the Groote Heide with several beautiful fens such as the Drooge Meerven, the Diepe Meerven, the Veeven and the Klein Huisven. One of the fens, the Groot Huisven, that was drained and reclaimed as pasture at the time was probably the largest heathland fen in the Netherlands. It concerns a more than 2.5 kilometer long, rather rugged depression, with a size of about 150 ha. The walk goes along this former fen, the relief of the bank zones are still (visibly!) present in the landscape.

In late 2023 and early 2024, there was more precipitation than average, resulting in the paths near fens being completely flooded. Early 2025, the situation has not improved much. In the route description, the GPS file and on the maps, an alternative is available 'At high water' in the fens that can be walked in the period when the fens are out of their banks.
