Brabantse Wal - Frog Path

  • Author: TrailExplorer

Brabantse Wal

This short walk passes eleven large and small fens, including the Forgotten Ven, Driebloksven and Oude Wasseven. In addition, the path leads along forest, heath and cultural landscape. With a little luck you will come across a herd of sheep or deer on the way. Or you can hear a concert of the many songbirds. Each season has its own appearance, but especially in August, when the heather blooms, this is highly recommended.

After a few kilometers you cross the Heiloop stream at the Jagersrust enclave and look out over the Moerven. At the westerly crossing on the Onze Lieve Vrouwe ter Duinenlaan you can see how the Heiloop, deep in the forest, finds its way to the polders of Ossendrecht. The stream was dug with human hands a long time ago to drain the low-lying areas between the high sand ridges and make them suitable for agriculture. You will also pass heathland areas that have recently been plagued: the top layer and dense vegetation have been removed for more light and space for vulnerable nature. The unspoilt environment around the fens is reason enough to come and walk here in August - when the heather blooms. Certainly if this area has developed even more over a number of years. A few times a year there is a chance that you will come across a herd of sheep. They graze the heathland and the surroundings of the fens to keep the places open.
