Schadijk forests.
The forest area De Schadijkse Bos, more than 500 hectares in size, was created at the end of the 19th century when heathland areas throughout the Netherlands were afforested, often with Scots pine. This type of wood was very suitable as prop for the coal mines in Limburg, because pine wood 'warns' because it will crack when it comes under pressure. At the moment it is again a varied forest area with a large drifting dune landscape with heather, the Schaaks Heide. The Second World War has also left its traces in this forest area, the walking tour passes the memorial cross Derk van Assen.
