Loenermark.

The walk goes through the beautiful Loenense forest to the Groenouwe Estate. You continue through a small heather field towards the Hilvense Heide. Here you have beautiful views over this vast heathland with solitary oaks and dark green fly pines. Just off the route is the Loenermark calibration base, this spot chosen as a control point for (land) surveying instruments in north-western Europe. With the advent of satellite positioning, the IJkbasis fell out of use after 2000. Further on, you pass a small pond before climbing to the viewpoint Altar Of The Loenermark. Through mixed forest you continue walking until you reach the Loenermark sheepfold. This is where a large flock of Veluwe moorland sheep spend the night. During the day they go with their shepherd to the moors of the Loenermark.

If at a junction there is no marking then you should just walk straight ahead.

Map & Poi's.

POI 1 - Calibration base Loenermark.

The Loenermark is located in the most geologically stable part of the Netherlands. The soil hardly moves there; there are no quakes or subsidence. This is why this site was chosen as a checkpoint for (land) surveying instruments in north-western Europe. With the advent of satellite positioning (GPS), the Calibration Base fell out of use after 2000.
