Plan de Fontmort.

From the old station you walk on the famous Chemin de Stevenson GR70 to the Plan de Fontmort. The Plan de Fontmort is a pass where several roads meet. The name Fontmort is said to come from Occitan: Font Morta, which means a dry source. The legend that is attributed to Fontmort is a little more horrible. A very feared witch lived on the top of Mont Mars. An old widow lived nearby who, despite her old age, had succumbed to the pleasures of the flesh and had become pregnant. She gave birth to a child and to punish her, the witch condemned her to carry a huge rock and roam around with her child, dog and donkey until the end of her days. The old woman left with a heavy load, but the weak child died shortly after her departure. She buried the child at the pass called Plan de Fontmort (Plan d'enfant mort). From the Plan de Fontmort you walk further on the GR70 to La Pierre Plantée, here is a menhir and it is also a nice picnic area with beautiful views of the Cévennes and Mont Aigoual. Just past the menhir you leave the route of the GR70 and follow the GR7 - GR67 to the Col de Laupies. From the Col you descend via a beautiful forest path to the river La Mimente. Here you follow the GR72 along the bed of an old railway line that connected Nimes with Paris through Florac and Clermont Ferrand. It was built between 1906 and 1909 and was suspended in 1968.
