't Plat.

The route departs along the edge of the forest before continuing on winding forest paths and forest roads. Along the way you will encounter a small piece of heathland, but mixed forest remains the main backdrop. You cross the busy N715 and soon you can catch a glimpse of a sand extraction pit. Suddenly a large sand dune appears. You now cross the dune in the direction of the Heide Achter De Steenweg. There is no longer any heather here, but you enter a more open landscape with beautiful views. You follow the edge of the forest and cross the N715 for a second time. The landscape here changes from dry sandy soils to a moist area. You now follow the course of the Holvense brook for a while and you arrive in the nature reserve 't Plat. This area is a remnant of swampy grounds in the vicinity of the Holvense brook. The higher part of the area consists of heather where the fragrant gale grows abundantly.

POI - 't Plat.

't Plat is a remnant of swampy grounds in the vicinity of the Holvense brook. The higher areas consisted of heath and sand dunes. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the Holven, popularly referred to as "Plat" or "klotkoten", was first mentioned. Het Holven was a hollowed-out fen that was created in the wet heath by cutting peat and lump. That was the fuel of the local population. Peat is the top layer of humus, especially heather herbs, while clot is the bottom layer formed by bog plants. Flat here therefore does not mean 'flat', but 'swampy'.
