Walking in the desert.

The walk first goes through a beautiful forest with some original willow huts to the Lommel Sahara, here you get a first impression of this unique nature reserve. At the beginning of the 20th century, sand extraction was widespread in this area. After the Second World War, conifers were planted and now the sand pits are filled with water. The walk then continues through coniferous forest where up to 50 years ago the explosives factory Poudreries Réunies de Belgique had its test site. Of these, remnants can be found such as a shelter, the place where employees hide when testing grenades. There is also a ruin of a destruction pit, a structure with a diameter of around 10 meters in which superfluous ammunition was demolished. Just like the original concrete safety pyramids, which had to stop shrapnel and cannonballs. After this detour you walk back in the direction of the lake and you go over the white sand in the direction of the watchtower. The tower is 30 meters high and has three platforms that offer you a wide view of the area. From the tower it goes in the direction of the Kempisch canal, you cross this via the pedestrian bridge that was awarded the steel construction prize in 2002. Once over the canal you walk a bit over the Bleker heath and forest back to the canal. You cross this again to return through a wooded area to the starting point.
