Antitankgracht and Haachts Broek

The Antitankgracht and the adjacent Haachts Broek are a beautiful walking area with bridges and bat paths. The canal that once had to stop the German tanks is now full of aquatic life. While walking you occasionally come across a herd of large grazers that provide open spaces. The abandoned bunkers on your path are the permanent hibernation site for bats.

POI 1 - Antitankgracht and Haachts Broek.

The Antitankgracht, the Haachts Broek and the Schorisgat together form the beautiful green belt of the Leibeek valley. The Antitankgracht is a remnant from the Second World War, where amphibians now give croaking concerts. In the Schorisgat you can walk on the oldest road of Haacht, built by the Celts. The Haacht Broek are a wet area because the loamy sand and clay soil is difficult to penetrate. Just because the area is so water-rich, buildings were spared. The wet soils were used as pastures, while the higher and therefore drier soils were suitable as a field. This is a fairly large nature reserve with a lot of variation. It is a patchwork of forest, meadow, field and thickets. With the help of grazing we try to relinquish management. In addition to enjoying the beautiful nature, you can also discover a portion of heritage here. For example, you can visit the Antitankgracht, which was built in 1939 and is recognized as a war monument and nature reserve. Its purpose was to stop armored vehicles in the event of a hostile invasion. The Antitankgracht was part of the KW line: it ran from Koningshooikt to Wavre. Near the Antitankgracht you can discover the remains of the Castle of Roost. The castle has a rich past that goes back to the fourteenth century. Only a part of the outer moat has remained visible.
