The walk starts at the reception building and you follow a nice path through the forest. Soon you will arrive at the Gertry pond. There is a beautiful viewing platform at the pond and a bird watching hut a little further. There are several ponds spread over the domain. A unique canal system feeds these ponds with calcareous water from the Kempen canal. You continue through the forest and pass the Merpikdel pond. Now the landscape becomes more open with a beautiful wet meadow to your left. At the Kattesteert pond you should definitely take a look at the bird hide. Here you can observe numerous water birds and who knows you can spot a kingfisher. You continue on a wide dirt road along the Sint-Willebrords farm and the stately Koningshoeve dike in the direction of the Bocholt-Herentals canal. You cross the canal at Sas 7. You go along the canal for a while and then dive into the forests of SCK-CEN. Here you walk on beautiful unpaved paths, meandering through this peaceful forest. You come back to the canal that you follow in the direction of Sas 6. At Sas 6 you cross the canal again and follow the course of the Hooibeek. You cross the Geelsebaan and you are back in the Prinsenpark. The beautiful beech trees are immediately noticeable. Along the Nestelweg you will discover the nest building skills of various birds. Peek inside and look for interesting facts on the flaps along the side.

POI 1 - Prinsenpark.

In the vast heathland between Geel, Kasterlee and Retie, residents of the municipality were allowed to let their cattle graze and dig peat at the time. In 1854, King Leopold 1 acquired approximately 398 ha from the “Retiese Aart”. The so-called park was built in the middle of the domain and in the center, where constructed roads converge, they wanted to build a castle. However, it never happened. The domain consists mainly of forests, but there are also five ponds in the park. The Gertry pond is the largest followed by the Kattesteert pond, Kleine Hooibeek pond, Merkpikdel and the duck pond. In addition to pine trees, the park also has beautiful oak and beech trees. Heather can be found at some places.
