THE VALLEY OF BASTARENY.

The route starts in the charming village of Baga and soon joins the Via del Nicolau. The Via del Nicolau was built at the beginning of the 20th century (1914-1916) to transport wood from Gisclareny to Guardiola de Berguedà. Its promoter was Tomàs Nicolau i Prieto, owner of the Berga sawmill, who had the concession until the mid-1930s. The mill then fell into disuse and the infrastructure gradually deteriorated. In 2009, the path was restored for tourist purposes. Quite soon you come to the first tunnel, a flashlight is not necessary. A second tunnel follows quite soon, this one has a bend and is a bit more special than the first. Once through the tunnel, the route continues to the viewpoint of the Bastareny valley. You continue along the only path and suddenly you are surprised by an old wagon loaded with logs. A perfect illustration to imagine how transport must have been along this narrow-gauge railway. After crossing a small bridge you will arrive at the 35 meter long suspension bridge of Nicolau. You follow the path for a while and then leave the old railway to visit the Church of Sr. Joan d'Avellanet. From now on you follow a wide dirt road back in the direction of Baga. On the way you will come across a nicely decorated picnic area and a viewpoint. The descent to Baga is about the most challenging part of this beautiful route.
