Castenray a place that, together with Leunen and Merselo and a few other places, has been created around the old center of Venray. During the large-scale reclamation of the Peel, which began in 1900, the municipality of Venray created forests and stimulated the conversion of the vast area of heathland and peatland into cultivated land. During this and the following stages, you will not see much of the heather and moors that once existed, yet it is an attractive varied landscape to walk in. Immediately after leaving Castenray, the stage goes through the Castenrayse Vennen nature reserve and then ends again through the Castenrays Broek, the forests of Breeheide, Hoogriebroek and the Leunense Paes in Leunen. The Castenrayse Fens consist of a beautiful varied swamp forest (brook forest) with a number of sparse grasslands, where an adventurous boot path over narrow paths. It can be quite wet, especially in winter and early spring, so high waterproof walking shoes are recommended. The Castenrayse Broek is an elongated stream valley through which the stream Lollebeek flows. The forests of Breeheide and Hoogriebroek are forest areas that are planted on a heather plain. The Leunense Paes is also a stream valley around the Oostrumsche Beek. In the area the stream meanders again and where it can go its own way, resulting in a beautiful varied nature reserve. As nature has been given freedom in this area, so are the visitors. There are no signs in the area with the message to stay on the paths, because there are no paths, a main walking route is followed whereby one must pay close attention to the route markers present.
