Pont du Tarn

The walk goes from the hamlet of L’Hôpital across the plain of the Haut Tarn to the Mas Camargues and the hamlet of Bellecoste. From there it goes along the edge of the Bois Du Commandeur, to the old medieval bridge Pont du Tarn. From the bridge the route follows the Tarn to the carrefour des quattres chemins. A little further you cross the river via a gué, so a bit of an adventure. The last part goes through a piece of forest and the open plain back to the starting point. The silence, the desolate landscape and the beautiful views make this walk a real highlight.

Over the plain of the Haut Tarn.

From L’Hôpital we follow a wide dirt road to the Mas Camargues. The name "Camargue" surprises on these highlands! Is he connected to the transhumance of herds from the plains of the Languedoc? Or is it a more precise reference to the Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem of the order of Malta? Since the Middle Ages, this religious and military order has indeed gained a lot of land in the Lozère. Whatever its origins, Mas Camargues is an agricultural area of more than 100 hectares that was very prosperous in the seventeenth century until the eve of the Great War. The road continues until just before the hamlet of Bellecoste, here we follow the GR72 along the Bois Du Commandeur to the old medieval bridge Pont du Tarn. Just after the bridge we leave the GR72 and follow the banks of the Tarn to the carrefour des quattre chemins. Here we go in the direction of the river to cross it along a gué, a crossing place. Once we have crossed the river, the route broadly follows the course of the Ruisseau de L’Hôpital through the plain back to the starting point.
