Chaumard

On 10 June 1944, the place where the memorial is now was chosen as the base for the resistance. The dense forest, the river and the steep slopes lent themselves particularly well to setting up a camp. On 31 July 1944 the German troops carried out a surprise attack with the result that 22 resistance fighters were killed. This walk goes from the beautiful village of Chaumard to this historic place.

In the footsteps of the Maquisards.

The walk leaves in the cozy village of Chaumard and after a rather steep climb you soon have a beautiful view of the Lac de Pannecière. Then it goes through a fairly open landscape to the hamlet of Les Quartres Vents and then into the forest. Totally unexpected you come to a small valley and you start to descend. In the middle of this dense forest is the memorial for the Maquisards who had their encampment here. It makes you think about the horror of the war. Then you descend further into the valley until you reach the D505. Here, too, there is a monument in memory of the fallen resistance fighters. Follow the traffic-calmed D505 along the banks of L'Oussière and then climb back and return to the starting point via a few small hamlets.
