The province of East Flanders consists of five major areas: the Meetjesland, the Waasland, the Leie Region, the Flemish Ardennes and the Scheldeland. The capital is the historical city of Ghent where Schelde and Leie flow together. The Meetjesland is the creek area in the north of the province and borders on the Dutch Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The Waasland is the land of Reynaert de Vos and of the famous carthographer Mercator. In the Leie region the old meanders of the Leie have created beautiful natural areas. The Scheldeland is a series of beautiful decors. The Flemish Ardennes consist of hills and valleys where the Zwalm and Bovenschelde flow.
