Unique to the downstream of the Zwarte Beek is the rapid transition from the wet marshes to very dry ridges. On the border of Kempen and Hageland you walk along snipe meadows and even large grazers are not missing on the route.

In Halen, the Zwarte Beek first flows through an open valley area where all kinds of meadow birds such as curlew, lapwing or snipe like to stay. An abandoned fishing pond has been transformed into an open water feature and an original viewing cabin gives you the chance to take a closer look at the birds present. The witness hills are very close together here. They are the remains of earlier sandbanks when the sea came here. The stream has to fold and wring to guide its water past the hills of the Hees, Gennep and an offshoot of the Kolenberg. In some places, the valley is only a few hundred meters wide. In the winter the meadows flood often.
